The University of Chinese Academy of Sciences is abbreviated as “National University of Science and Technology”. It is an innovative university with the integration of science and education as the school model, graduate education as the main body, and elite undergraduate education as the school's characteristics.
The graduate education of the National University of Science and Technology originated from the talent training of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1950, the Chinese Academy of Sciences started the recruitment and training of research interns. In June 1951, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Central Ministry of Education jointly issued the "Measures for Recruiting Research Interns and Postgraduates in the Summer of 1951 in Research Institutes Affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Research Departments of Higher Education Institutions under the Central Education Ministry." In August 1955, the "Interim Regulations for Graduate Students of the Chinese Academy of Sciences" was promulgated and implemented by Premier Zhou Enlai. In September 1964, the Chinese Academy of Sciences piloted the "Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences" in Beijing.
In 1977, the Chinese Academy of Sciences took the lead in resuming postgraduate enrollment. In order to meet the needs of recruiting and cultivating postgraduates from various institutes, the Graduate School of the University of Science and Technology of China was established in Beijing. In 1978, the first batch of postgraduate admissions resumed after enrollment. In 1982, the Party Group of the Chinese Academy of Sciences approved the use of the two names "Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences" and "Graduate School of the University of Science and Technology of China" at the same time. In December 2000, the school was renamed the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2005, the Academy of Management Cadres of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was merged into the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In June 2012, the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was renamed the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and began to recruit undergraduates in 2014, forming a higher education system covering the three levels of basic, master and Ph.D.
The National University of Science and Technology is an important undertaker of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' task of "being the first to build a national highland of innovative talents" and an important support for accomplishing the strategic mission of "producing results, talents and ideas". The core mission of the school is to use the science and education integration platform to select the highest quality education and teaching resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, provide it to graduate students and undergraduates, cultivate talents with both ethics and innovation, serve the country's innovation-driven development, and serve human civilization and progress make a contribution. As of December 2019, the National University of Science and Technology has granted a total of 171,526 graduate master's and doctoral degrees, of which 83,561 were awarded doctoral degrees; 598 undergraduate graduates were awarded bachelor's degrees. The National University of Science and Technology has trained the first doctor of science, the first doctor of engineering, the first female doctor, and the first double-degree doctor of new China, and has trained about one quarter of the "outstanding youth fund winners" in the country. Since its establishment in 1978, 137 students have been elected as academicians of the two academies.
The National University of Science and Technology has always adhered to the educational tradition of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, insisting on cultivating innovative and entrepreneurial talents in high-level scientific research practices. Graduate students have become a new force in national scientific and technological innovation.
